The American Family AssociationThe American Family Association or AFA is a group for people who are tired of failing in there efforts to have a morally safe family. This is a non-profit organization founded in nineteen seventy seven. Its founder was Don Wildmon. The American Family Association stands for traditional family values, focusing primarily on the influences of TV, and other media outlets, pornography being the main target. The American Family Association feels that the entertainment industry has played a major role in the decrease of those values that the country was founded. They believe that these values keep society and its families healthy and strong. One example is that over the last 25 years, we have seen the entertainment industry glorify premarital sex. Within that time we have suffered an increase in teen pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases and abortion as a means of birth control. They believe that the companies which sponsor programs attacking traditional family values should be held accountable. They also believe in commending the companies which act responsibly when it comes to programs they support. People who support the American Family Association receive a monthly letter about a specific issue with a recommended action like sending a postcard or making a phone call. These supporters also receive the AFA journal with news on various family and moral issues. The American Family Association does not support censorship. They do support responsibility. Advertisers and producers alike realize that what people see and hear does affect them. There belief is that if they can encourage advertisers to sponsor only quality programming, then producers and networks will not have the financial encouragement to produce shows who oppose the traditional family. This Association started back in nineteen seventy seven when a man name Don Wildmon just wanted to watch clean television with his family, who thought he would create such a wide spread organization. |
